Why this unexpected benefit from quitting my job is foundational for a meaningful life
The perk I most looked forward to when leaving my job was something you might not expect.
Space.
Sure, having more time to pursue my passions is amazing. Even more, though, is the appreciation I have for the space I have for thinking. Instead of responding to “urgent” questions from coworkers or the orders of my superiors, I have the space to think about what feels important in life and my work.
This space in my brain has done wonders for my stress levels, has allowed me to consider income possibilities I haven’t been able to appreciate before, and has made me feel like a more peaceful person overall.
On a recent nightly walk, I didn’t worry about work stresses or contemplate how I would handle a problem.
Instead, I felt truly present. I stared in awe at my surroundings as the Chicago skyline beckoned to the south and the still waters of Lake Michigan reflected the coral hue of the setting sun to the east. I took in the gentle breeze along the lakefront and noticed the honking of the geese as they traversed along the path.
I couldn’t appreciate these little things when I was working at a regular job.
